Google is Turning into Microsoft

I think Google is turning into Microsoft day by day. No, it is not because they are growing insanely. No, it is not because they are becoming evil (may be they are but not related to this post). It is because they are becoming very boring with their branding. Last week Google killed the product search service Froogle’s brand and renamed it to “Google Product Search”. They say Froogle name did not describe what the product does. Probably true but did Google mean web search? No, but it means web search now among other things. How did Klenex become synanomous with facial tissue? Yes, you got it now, right? So, I don’t buy this argument. I am thinking Google is becoming the next Microsoft.

The Venice Project is Now Called Joost

You must have heard the long time stealth Internet TV project called The Venice Project.

The buzz about the new product of the creators of popular file sharing program KaZaA and Skype is very loud.

Today it was announced that The Venice Project will be called Joost from now on. Janus Friis points out that while this name means nothing at the moment, “it will come to mean great quality Internet TV the way it should be”. We will see if this will be the case in the future.

I had the chance to play with the new initiative as an early beta tester. It is based on peer-to-peer technology and I must say the viewing experience was satisfactory for considering the project in its beta phase.

Zunetastic

You must have heard about Microsoft’s new portable media player Zune. If you hadn’t, now you did. It is no big deal, just a portable media player set to compete with iPod with its own DRM. Lots of stuff has been written about it from how it lets friends sharing music wirelessly to the social community that Microsoft is trying to build around the product, the deal Microsoft made with Universal Music Group and how some people had problems installing the Zune software.

Among all the news, the thing that grabbed my attention was this post, which pointed at the installation error screen of the Zune software. Granted, an installation error situation is a bad situation which probably puts a bad gesture on one’s face but would you scream (or do whatever that girl is doing) like this? I read different interpretations of this image. Is it orgasmic, does it show three people playing roll over on grass, is the girl that looks like in great pain hurt badly? I don’t know. Does this supposed to make someone feel better during an installation error? I don’t know. But what I know is that this is a bad choice of image. Actually, in my book, the decision to use this image is as bad as choosing brown color for a portable player that is supposed to be sexy and cool.
