Zunetastic

You must have heard about Microsoft’s new portable media player Zune. If you hadn’t, now you did. It is no big deal, just a portable media player set to compete with iPod with its own DRM. Lots of stuff has been written about it from how it lets friends sharing music wirelessly to the social community that Microsoft is trying to build around the product, the deal Microsoft made with Universal Music Group and how some people had problems installing the Zune software.

Among all the news, the thing that grabbed my attention was this post, which pointed at the installation error screen of the Zune software. Granted, an installation error situation is a bad situation which probably puts a bad gesture on one’s face but would you scream (or do whatever that girl is doing) like this? I read different interpretations of this image. Is it orgasmic, does it show three people playing roll over on grass, is the girl that looks like in great pain hurt badly? I don’t know. Does this supposed to make someone feel better during an installation error? I don’t know. But what I know is that this is a bad choice of image. Actually, in my book, the decision to use this image is as bad as choosing brown color for a portable player that is supposed to be sexy and cool.

Tune of the Week: Richard Bitch

This week’s tune of the week comes from Richard Bitch. Interesting name, huh?. This is a band I don’t know whole a lot about. They are a band from San Francisco. I must have heard them in one of the episodes of Insomnia Radio San Francisco but it was until the other day when I listened to Insomnia Radio 108 that I took notice of the band.

Richard Bitch is composed of Tracy, John and Colin. Their debut album is called Really Really Jeff Hair People and they feature three songs off of that album here. They also note that their newer songs are available on their Myspace page.

Actually, the only song that I listened from them yet is @ The Playa Del Rey. I immediately liked it. Although I liked the whole song, my most favorite part starts at about 2:30 minute mark. Give it a listen and if you like them let the band know that you heard them here. Their album is also available at CD Baby and Amazon if you want to buy.

About

About Me

Welcome. My name is Turker Keskinpala. I am a graduate student studying towards Ph.D in Electrical Engineering at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN. I work as a research assistant at the Institute for Software Integrated Systems.

Although it may be possible to sum up the life of a grad student with the above two lines, there is more to me than that. For one, I am married to my adorable wife, Hande, since 2001.

Disappointed? Yeah, I can understand. Promise, I will add more here as soon as possible.

Vanderbilt in Web 2.0 Style

I have just noticed that Vanderbilt has a website for the student community: InsideVandy. The tagline says it is Vanderbilt University’s online student community. It is a site with content created by the students for the students. I think this is a great initiative by Vandy. About page reveals that this is a project of the Student Media at Vanderbilt University.

The website is built on Drupal as it is evident from the site icon and the install directory. The design looks neat. But most importantly it is a platform for Vandy students to voice their opinions and interact with other students. Registered users can have a blog, post pictures, and submit stories. I have no idea if this is precedented. If so, I would like to see what other university has this kind of a website that lets students create content and blog.

Tune of the Week: Recliner

This week’s tune of the week features Recliner, a San Francisco, California band. They have a nice rock sound that I like. Here is how they describe their sound on their Myspace profile:

Our sound has been called contagious, neurotic, melodic, relentless – the perfect music for washing your car, or driving it over a cliff. Tube-fed guitars, driving rhythms and sweet vocal harmonies, recorded and mixed entirely on analog tape (look ma – no pro tools) for that warm, buttered-bacon feel. That’s Recliner in a nutsack (shell – we meant nutshell).

Their website is worth a visit since it features news and diary from the band. The band also has recently started a music video podcast. You can subscribe to their video podcast here.

Moving the Web Site

Update: Move is complete. It went pretty well. The blog should be functioning as I used to be now.

I am going to be moving the website within my host. For this reason, the blog may not be accessible starting sometime tonight. I am hoping to be back up on Monday or Tuesday if all goes well. You won’t need to be changing anything when it comes back up. Wish me luck!
