Google announced a new mobile Java application which delivers Gmail to any J2ME-enabled mobile phone. There is already a mobile version of Gmail which is accessible via the browser on the mobile phone. However, this new application brings a richer experience and the look and feel of Gmail. Among the functionality included is search, conversation view, and automatic synchronization with the desktop version.
The completely free application can be downloaded from here. Although the application is free, it is worth mentioning that the service carrier will charge for the internet access through the mobile phone.
Google also announced a partnership with Sprint. According to the press release, Sprint will provide links to easily download Gmail for mobile devices directly from the Sprint PCS VisionSM or Sprint Power VisionSM home page.

Oh, yeah … that new J2ME GMail app is Da Bomb, ain’t it?
Wonder if they will ever take a crack at a J2ME browser.
Opera Mini is wicked cool but there are still sights that will blow it up.
Yea! It sure looks great and googley, I have downloaded it and installed with a few problems that I solved eventually. But my main problem is:
If I have more than one mail besides gmail I must install two or three programs to watch, send? At the moment my favorite program is Movamail http://movamail.com/ because you can use multiple accounts (gmail, yahoo mail, hotmail, aol?) and it supports POP, IMAP and Webmail and I think it will overcome Gmail just because it?s versatile.
Thanks for your comments Axinar and HuLsH. I didn’t have a chance to try the app first hand but I read that there are people who say they still prefer the browser version because of slow load times and because you should close the app to switch to anything else on the phone.
