Allofmp3 Frees Music Catalog

Allofmp3, Russia based online music store, started offering all its music catalog for free. What is the catch? There is no catch actually but the files are 128bps music files in mp3x format which can only be played using the so-called Music for Masses player.

The news about this is a bit confusing though. It was being reported that the company switched to an add supported model to provide free music which cannot be transferred to any other computer or any portable players. Basically you just download it and listen to it on one machine. This may be seen as another form of DRM as Techdirt also points at. However, what is confusing is that, it does not look like Allofmp3 is abandoning its current operation. It seems they are continuing selling high quality mp3’s without any restrictions. This seems like a little extra option. The way it was reported made it look like it was a complete switch and the news that Visa dropped its support added to the confusion.

I have downloaded and installed the player and downloaded some songs and it seems to be working pretty well. I didn’t see any ads while playing the music, so I am not sure at what point the “ad supported” concept kicks in. The process is not that smooth since it involves going to the website, selecting albums, downloading songs individually from the albums and then opening them up with the player.

What is also pretty interesting is that this announcement came in a time when there is big pressure for the company to shut down because of its illegal operations. Although Allofmp3 claims they are legal under Russian laws, which is probably true, especially RIAA is not happy with it. Allofmp3 sells pretty cheap music but the money does not make its way back to the artists. Legal or not, one thing is certain that customers demand reasonably priced music which they are willing to pay for.

No Fast Internet for Iran

There is no doubt that the internet has changed the world and is continuing to change it. The amount of information is limitless. The information is both good and bad. Anyone who is looking for something either good or bad can access it. This is definitely threatening to some people and countries. We know that China is particularly selective about which information Chinese may access with a censorship policy.

Iran, on the other hand, is taking a different approach and going deeper to find a solution to the problem. Guardian reports that Iran bans fast internet access to prevent the effect of the western culture. According to the news, there are about 5 million internet users in the country. The service providers are ordered to limit the connection speeds to 128 KB/s and they are forbidden to offer faster connection speeds. Looks like it is still not possible for governments to ban internet all together and the way to go is to make it more painful to access the information.

Techdirt points to the words of Homeland Security Secretary about how internet can help someone develop radical ideologies. Is this a sign that governments will start applying RIAA like actions on a different domain?

Tune of the Week: Brad Sucks

Brad Sucks is “a one man band with no fans”. Brad is really a one man band and a true do-it-yourself type. He records and produces his songs and truly embraces the power of the internet by distributing his album free. He does not stop there and goes ahead and provides the sources so that whoever is interested can take them and create a remix.

His album, I Don’t Know What I’m Doing, can be downloaded for free and it is also available for sale from his own store and the fact that it is sold even though it is available for free should be proving something to the big labels who are being control freaks.

You can also buy his album from Amazon, iTunes, Magnatune, and CD Baby.

The song I chose for tune of the week for this week is Dirtbag. Enjoy and let him know if you liked him and buy his album if you can.

Blog Theme Inconsistency

You may have noticed that there has been an inconsistency with the design of my blog. I know it is not very good to have constantly changing website design but I am experimenting with different templates at the moment. I thought I was very happy with the last design but I noticed today that it looked awful in IE. So, I changed to a more simplistic template. I like it but not completely satisfied with it. Nevertheless, since I do not have time to make changes and look for new themes, I will stick with this one for a while. Also, the Amazon links were creating problems in IE as well and I opted to take them off for a while.

My ultimate goal is to redesign the site and have a complete site with different sections and the blog. As soon as I am done with my area paper defense, I will start working on a design which will make my online presence more complete.

Guns N’ Roses in Nashville

Guns N’ Roses are coming to Nashville on October 22nd and we will be there. They are going to be rocking the Gaylord Entertainment Center.

It is just 3 days before my area paper defense but I figured this is something not to be missed. I am just hoping to be ready for my defense by then but even if I will not be, it will be a great boost before the defense.

We are very excited about it and looking forward to a great show.

Here is a short video of them playing Sweet Child of Mine at Bilbao Live festival:
