Free SkypeOut in US and Canada

As I read on Techcrunch,Skype announced that SkypeOut calls to landline or mobile phones in US and Canada are now free. It does not matter where the user account is created, what matters is where you are at the time of calling. Although, I do not use Skype for domestic calls and I think most people have long distance included in their mobile plans, it is still an important move.

PhD Cliche of the Week: Procrastination

PhD is not a smooth process. It is not an easy career path. There are lots of bumps on the road and it is very easy to get frustrated with sometimes slow progress. Frustration may lead one to different paths. One path that one may find himself/herself in is procrastination. It is very easy to postpone doing things when they do not seem easy or when there are lots of them waiting to be got done. Procrastination is usually accompanied by a feeling of guilt during and/or after. So, it is neither helpful nor useful.

So, stop reading this and get your thing done. Oh, in the meantime, you may want to click on the picture above for an awesome short video before you get that thing of yours done.

Lyrics or Melody?

As I was listening to some Turkish rock songs, I wondered how it would be like to listen to those without knowing Turkish. If there are not any special instruments, most songs sound the same despite the language. So, likewise, those rock songs sounded familiar until the singer started singing in Turkish. I started to wonder if such a song would mean anything to the listener who does not know any Turkish and does not understand what the song is about.

I experience this situation when I listen to songs in other languages, especially Spanish. I feel like I like those songs although I don’t understand the story. I even had a Patricia Kaas album in French that I used to listen and enjoy. Well, those were my romantic times when I was chasing after my wife, but that is another story.

I think when you listen to a song in a foreign language, sometimes the melody overcomes the lyrics and not understanding the story doesn’t take anything away from your enjoyment. I also think there are times when the voice of the singer is so powerful that you don’t even notice the language of the lyrics.

CNN Turk Starts Podcasting

I am a bit late reporting this news but CNN Turk (joint venture between CNN International and Dogan Media Group of Turkey) started podcasting and videocasting more than 30 original programs. This move marks the most mainstream podcasting adaptation to take place in Turkey.

Feeds for the podcasts and vidcasts can be found here. Podcasts are all in Turkish. I have subscribed to the video podcasts and watched a couple programs. Some programs are not broadcasted in their entirity rather some parts are included in the video feed. CNN Turk even vidcasts weather forecasts.

Database Problem

Yesteday there was an unexpected problem with the database that this blog uses and access to the site was impossible. I gt to fix it late at night thanks to my database backup from last week or so. However, I still lost some recent comments. I apologize from people who got into the conversation here. Comments are valuable to me and I am sad they had to disappear.

As I had to fix stuff, I went ahead and upgraded Wordpress to the recent stable release and changed the theme. The theme may not be the ultimate you will see for some time but it gave me a chance to play with the Sidebar Widgets plugin. I will keep changing the theme or the K2 styles I use frequently. So, don’t be surprised to see different layouts in your visits. That is, if anyone is frequently stopping at the site :)
