Interesting Onfolio News - Microsoft Acquisition

I just now received an email from Sebastian Gard of Onfolio stating that Microsoft has acquired Onfolio on March 8th, 2006. It has almost been a month and I had not heard about this. This is very interesting news. The email goes on to say that Onfolio is now free and comes with the Microsoft Windows Live Toolbar.

There is more information about the acquision here. Also, there is more information about the toolbar add-in here. The acquisition faq is an interesting read. It basically says that the current version of Onfolio will not be supported and only the new toolbar add-in will be supported. By the way, the toolbar add-in does not have all the features of the current version and there will be no Firefox version. There are so many good features of the current Onfolio version like the reference capture features of the Academic and Scientific Edition and like web publishing, I cannot justify a switch at the moment. I think another big bump for a switch is the inexistance of a Firefox version. The faq states that Onfolio team will keep working on the product to be integrated with Windows Live products.

You may also be eligible for a refund if you bought Onfolio on or after December 8, 2005. I did not investigate why this date but I am sad that I do not seem to be eligible for a refund which does not make sense at the moment. I will investigate this issue.

Although I am happy for the Onfolio team, I am sad for the product to be downgraded (at least for now) to a Windows Live Toolbar add-in. The Onfolio team had such a good support and care for the customers, I am afraid the relationship will be hurt because of the acquisition. Especially for me since there will be no more support for the Firefox version. It will be interesting to see the developments.

UPDATE: Sebastian Gard of Onfolio (and now MS) stopped by in the comments and clarified the refund issue and the future development of Onfolio. On a positive note, now that I am thinking about it, it may be easier for Onfolio to implement the highly requested synchronization feature :)

  1. Hey there - it’s Sebastian from Onfolio / Microsoft. You mentioned that you didn’t know why we picked December 8th as the cut-off for refunds. That is 90 days prior to the announcement of the acquisition. This is a pretty standard timeframe for deals like this.

Also, keep in mind that most of the people who worked on Onfolio are going to continue working on Onfolio at Microsoft, and we are taking with us all of the customer feedback and issues that we’ve gathered over the last couple years and will be working to make Onfolio great as a Microsoft product. We know people want Firefox support, and we know that a lot of people liked the publishing features and the academic features, so we will be working to get all that sorted out.

  2. Thanks for stopping by and clariying a few points Sebastian. I am glad to hear that the team will be working to improve Onfolio. All the best for you and the team…

  3. I really hope Firefox continues to be supported. I adore Onfolio, and the integration with FF is a big part of that. I don’t want FF 2.0 to come out and lose Onfolio!
