PhD Cliche of the Week:Striking the Balance

I decided to start a regular section on my blog and got inspired by Fred Wilson who does the VC Cliche of the Week posts every week. Of course, I am going to write in a completely different issue. I don’t really know how many readers of this blog are graduate students but I thought it would be good have a post about my observations on PhD studies every week.

I feel I should first put some disclaimers here. What I am going to write will not really be cliches and I am not an expert on graduate studies nor I am an expert on being a PhD student. Actually, I don’t recommend anyone to try to be an expert on being a PhD student :) I just gave that name to my posts because I liked it. I will just try to write about some of my personal observations. Keep in mind that my observations will be coming from Electrical Engineering/Computer Science field so they may not apply to everyone. Moreover, everyone may be experiencing or observing something completely different based on where they study even if they are in the same field.

As these disclaimers are out of the way now I can continue with the fun part. Here goes the first post.

I have been thinking a lot lately on the balance between academic responsibilities and research project responsibilities of a PhD student. I can hear people saying: “Wait a minute, aren’t they the same thing?”. Well, may be or may be not. A PhD student usually works as a Research Assistant on a funded research project which pays the bills and helps the student afford a decent life. On the other hand, the student is responsible for doing scientific research and produce a dissertation thesis to contribute to his field of study. I call the dissertation responsibility an academic responsibility. It is not always the case that the research project and the dissertation concentration align.

When you are starting a research project, no one can guarantee that what you will do for the project will be a part of your thesis. Even if the project and your dissertation align to some degree, the responsibilities are still different. The research project forces you think about implementation at least %70 of the time whereas your academic responsibility forces you to think about novelty and scientific research at least %70. If you do the math at this point, you can see a clear problem of balance. The complexity of the situation increases if you have a research advisor/supervisor in addition to your academic advisor. This separates the person who you should satisfy with your adacemic progress, and the person who you should satisfy with your research project progress.

Sometimes the project that you are working on seems more exciting because you may like implementation more and enjoy it more when you see the output of your work in a shorter time. The academic responsibilities sometimes look harder to accomplish since it requires constant research to make progress and you may not get your results as soon. If you tend to shift the balance from one responsibility to the other, you may be reminded about the one that you are lacking progress.

I was once told that the only reason a PhD student works on a research project is because he is working on his/her dissertation. I was also once told that there is a day and a night in a whole day to work on the research project and dissertation. So, striking the balance between research project and academic responsibilities is an important part of the PhD process. I think if this is accomplished a smoother and more enjoyable PhD experience may be achieved.

Night Club at Neighbor’s Backyard

As we are working on a Saturday night which I am sure is abnormal for many people, our neighbors are having an engagement party in their backyard. Probably that is what is normal on a saturday night, no? Loud hiphop and dance music is hitting the walls in our house. Ok, I will admit we danced a bit to some of the sounds :) But it becomes annoying after 4 hours of constant hipping and hopping. I hope they will stop soon.

I wonder what the rule is for these kind of things. I mean if someone is being disturbed like this, would he be able to complain about it to somewhere?

Performancing Extension Update

Performancing recently released an updated version of the Performancing for Firefox blogging extension. It was already working great but I am loving the new FTP Upload feature. It makes posting a lot faster. I cannot count the times where I didn’t attach a picture to a quick post because it would involve many separate actions. Now, it is very easy. Check the extension out if you have not done so yet.

Watch an Eagle Giving Birth Live

Do you want to watch live when a Bald Eagle is giving birth? Well, you can. Looks like Hornby Island, British Columbia, Canada is big on eagles (I had no idea) and they installed Eagle cam which broadcasts from a bald eagle’s nest as she is very close to giving birth. The big day is the 26th of April.

When you watch the live broadcast you can hear background noises from time to time. Looks like there were some people who were concerned that would disturb the eagle in some way. There is even a news item clarifying this point:

Hearing Background Noise!
The eagles nest is placed on private property, where the owners sometimes do yard work which can make some noise. The eagles are safe and are not bothered by this background noise. Thank you for your inquires!

Watch the Eagle cam live at Hancock Wildlife Channel.

Computer Book Market Analysis

O’Reilly Radar recently published some data regarding the State of the Computer Book Market, Part 2 in the US. O’Reilly believes that the book sales are a good indicator of where the industry is focusing on. There is also a Part 1 and Part 3 of this analysis.

In Part 2, O’Reilly analyzes the market in categories, namely, Systems and Programming, Web Design and Development, Digital Media Applications, and some other dimensions. I am mostly interested in the Systems and Programming area. I am not going to copy the whole analysis but couple things cought my attention more than others. According to the data, there is increasing sales for Software Engineering books which O’Reilly attributes to the tendency of the industry to “build right and to scale”. Moreover, Software Project Management book sales were also rising and the “Agile” meme is replacing the “Extreme” meme. Finally, if this data is really a reflection of the industry, we are far from secure applications because the security books are not showing any increase. Industry either have concepts nailed down or they think they nailed down or even worse they don’t care about security and secure applications.

Dirty Bomb Detection and Localization

It is not my research area but Information Processing in Sensor Networks conference will be held in Nashville this year starting from tomorrow. ISIS will be involved with a large scale sensor network demo called Dirty Bomb Detection and Localization on Thursday April 20th. The demo will be held in the Vanderbilt Football Stadium. There are more technical details on the demo website but to summarize, the goal is to be able to track a security guard with plain clothing who will be walking around the stadium with a cell phone-integrated radiation detector. The tracking will be done using a technique called radio interferometric positioning technique developed at ISIS.

If you think this is cool, even cooler news is that there is a Google Earth based user interfacewhich can be used to watch the demo live.
