Hande’s Prelim

Hande is in the prelim exam at that very moment which is three days short of a year from my prelim exam. I hope she is doing great in there. It sucked that I was not with her for this last week when she needed the most support during preperation. It sucks even more that I wasn’t able to ease her nerves right before the exam. Hopefully, it will all end well today and she will be able to move on with her Phd without worrying about a prelim exam ever again. I am very glad I will be back home tomorrow evening.

Performancing Metrics

Performancing launched their real-time blog statistics service called Performancing Metrics today. I pasted the code to the template of my blog. I am expecting something good judging from how I love the Performancing for Firefox blogging extension.

Snow in San Francisco

The news story goes as Rare Snow Covers Bay Area but I am not sure “rare” is enough to describe the snow that came after 30 years. It must have been an interesting day for the people of San Francisco as they saw everywhere covered in white. Personally, I can’t imagine the situtation when ice covers those steep hills of San Francisco streets. I know for sure that I would not want to drive.

After learning that news, I thought there would already be images of snow in San Francisco on Flickr. To my dissappointment I was only able to find this picture which shows the snow forecast. I might have not searched for the right tags but no snow pictures were returned. If you find some, let me know in the comments.

Origami Devices

Origami Devices

I have no intentions to turn this blog into Engadget, but in order to complete the series of posts that I posted about Microsoft’s Origami here and here, I felt it is necessary to say that everything about the Origami Project teaser has been revealed this week at CeBIT. I am a bit late at posting this but turns out the buzz was about a new gadget buzz concept called Ultra Mobile PC (UMPC). I think the excitement was a little calmed down after the details went out about it. You can get more coverage on that at Engadget or at Origami Portal.

The picture above is from Engadget and shows the three UMPC devices from Samsung, ASUS, and Founder.

Possible Origami Pics Leaked

origami

Above is a picture of Origami which was leaked to the web and shown at Origami Portal. Although there is no evidence that this is the real thing most people seem to be believing that it is not a mock up.

This thing looks undeniably cool. The form factor seems acceptable. It is not clear from the buttons how the navigation will be like when the touchscreen is not used with a stylus. Well, you may think that there would not be anytime when touchscreen will not be used but I guess it would be nice to have a play/pause or stop buttons on the device itself for convenience. Since this is not a confirmed picture it doesn’t really make sense to critic it though. From the icons on the interface and the device, it seems like it is wireless enabled. as well. If Microsoft can really come up with this device and make it real good, they may steal the coolness factor from iPod in a heartbeat.

I have a feeling after his evidence of the new portable media device, Microsoft will take a similar stance saying that this is just a early prototype design. On the other hand, there may very well be a video showing how this mock up was created even before Microsoft responds :)

March Madness

March madness is a term that I got introduced when I came to US. I have always enjoyed the basketball fest that takes place all march. But I am not talking about the basketball fest when I say March Madness in this post.

We are in March now February felt even shorter than it is. March will be a very busy and travel intensive month for me. I am going to be away from home for a total of 18 days this month. I am already in Chicago at the moment for two days including today. I will be in Geneva, Switzerland to visit CERN again for the project that I am working on from March 8th to 16th and will be in Postdam, Germany from March 25th to 31st for the System Testing and Validation Workshop which is held in conjuction with the ECBS Conference. I will be presenting a paper there. In the meantime, I should be able to finish my area paper before the mad month of March ends.

Finally, Hande will be taking the Phd preliminary exam on March 15th.

I just hope that everything will turn out fine in March for us.
