Major Google Algorithm Update

It just got to my attention that there is a major algorithm update that Google is working on. The article that I went through Digg also gives two IP addresses (66.249.93.104 and 64.233.179.104) that can be used to test the new algorithm. I ran a couple of test searches and the new search seems even faster than the current algorithm. According to the article the new algorithm is bound to go live in mid-February or early March. I hope it fixes some of the current problems with Google search. This came as a surprise to me since I was telling a friend the other day that Google needs to update the search algorithm.

IP Location Lookup

I came across a cool Google Maps mash up. IP location lookup puts the location of an IP address on the map.

Did Yahoo Buy SearchFox?

There seem to be some development in the closing of SearchFox. Techcrunch reports:

Reliable sources are reporting that SearchFox, which announced that it will be shutting down as of January 25, 2006, has sold its assets to Yahoo. At least some of the employees have moved over to Yahoo as well….more

If this is true, it will be great news for the fans of SearchFox reader like me.

SearchFox Is No More

I received an email message from Estaban Kozak of SearchFox RSS giving the sad news that SearchFox RSS is shutting down on January 25, 2006. I checked the official blog, thinking there had to be something that I missed that was going on. I just saw the same information in the email message. I immediately send an email to Kozak asking for more info but he said he can’t say anything publicly about it yet. There will be a formal announcement shortly.

I am sad to see such a promising service go dark. I had liked SearchFox RSS mainly because it was a hopeful solution to information flow coming with RSS subscriptions. For the curious reader out there, I had written a somewhat detailed review of SearchFox RSS back in September 2005.
