Google Talk

What is Google Talk? Whatever it is, it seems like Google will be announcing Google Talk tomorrow according to Neowin. There is a lot of speculation on what it could be, from it being a Skype competitor, to VOIP/IM meta client, or free WiFi. One thing that seems to be clear is that Google Talk will be using the open source Jabber client which means that any IM client would be able to use the service.

In my opinion, Google would not just come up with a regular IM to compete with MSFT, Yahoo!, and AOL. My observation is that Google tends to go one step ahead of the competition if it is coming from behind. Well, I may be wrong as well because the service will most probably introduced as beta and may have limited features at first. I guess we will see that tomorrow. It is always exciting to see what Google has in store.

Discover New Music with Pandora

I bet you heard about Pandora. If you haven’t I bet you will hear about it pretty soon, if you are a music fan who likes discovering new music. Pandora, which is created by The Music Genome Project,  is in preview stage at this moment and is not open to public. However, I was lucky enough to get an invitation to try out the service before it goes public. Man, do I love about getting my hands on new services before masses. That being said, it was not very hard to get an invitation to Pandora to my surprise. I just entered my email address on the Pandora home page on Saturday and I received an invitation email couple of hours ago. Ok, ok enough about that. You want to hear the details, right?

Pandora is a new way to discover new music. You basically communicate with the player. Really. It asks you about a song or artist name that you like, and takes over the job of bringing you music that you will like. I can say it is pretty cool after trying it out for 15 minutes. Interaction with Pandora player is not limited to the initial song selection. As you are listening to songs, you can click on the song and ask Pandora why it played that particular song. You may also tell it to never play that song again, or tell it to create a new station from the playing song. You are also promoted to buy the song from iTunes or buy the album CD from Amazon.

I liked the “Why did you play this song?” question. When I asked this question when listening to a song in my Metallica channel, I received the below response:
Based on what you’ve told us so far, we’re playing this track because it features hard rock roots, mild rhythmic syncopation, minor key tonality, demanding instrumental part writing and a dirty electric guitar solo.

You gotta love that! I listen to music but I am not a real expert when it comes to describing the music that I listen to. In this sense, I think Pandora will not only help me explore new music, but also discover my taste in more musical terms.

Pandora is in preview mode, and it can definitely improve in some areas. Things that got my attention immediately:
  • It is possible to skip songs but it is not possible to come back to that song. Neither is it possible to listen a song you particularly like again.
  • When I switch stations it does not remember what was playing when I return to that station. Every click on the station it seems to be recreating the playlist. I don’t know if this is really a bad thing, but it would be nice if the song list could be remembered.

Pandora is listening to the early feedback and their blog is here.

Latest Comcast Screw Up

This is hillarious, and sad of course. Turns out Comcast brought a new dimension to all the ways it screws up customers. Providing bad service is one thing, but changing the name of a customer to “Bitch Dog” in the records is simply out of this world! On top of that, forgetting to change it back? One should ask that rep what she were thinking! I am sure many of frustrated Comcast customers had changed the name of Comcast and possibly even the reps in their mental records but when the company does that, it is unacceptable.

So far, it doesn’t appear Comcast was very prepared. Its response: offer LaChania two months of free service (she declined) and an apologetic phone call from the VP of Customer Care. How unremarkable.

This is beyond unremarkable, in my opinion. Thinking that you can repair one’s feelings with free two months service is a very shallow perspective. This is how Comcast usually tries to solve the problems of many frustrated customers. “Let me give you free month of service, and you forget what happened, and forget the endless times you spent waiting on the line and being have to explain your problem to many different clueless customer reps. How is that for a deal?”, says Comcast most of the time. The reason for this is very simple. There is no competition!

Church of the Customer also recommends some remarkable actions that Comcast could take to recover its image.

Microsoft Acrylic New Version

Remember when I wrote about Microsoft’s professional graphic design application, Acrylic? As I leaned from Scoble, there is now a new version of the application under the name of Community Technology Preview. This time, the website looks better and there are even demos of what can be done with Acrylic. I have to say the video quality of the demos were not very high, though. Is it just me or are the demos low quality for anyone else? I may download and try Acrylic myself when I have some free time to play with it. By the way, Acrylic is just a code name and will most probably be changed to a regular boring Microsoft product name. My guess is Microsoft Professional Graphic Design Application. Would anyone else want to take a guess?

Cell companion chip gets hot demo

I think this was a good way to show off the new Cell processor. My favourite qoute from the article: "Have fun programming on the Cell!". I think the real practical power of the Cell will be dependent on how well the programmers will be able to make use of the architecture. Don’t you think?
