I have a whiteboard in my cubicle. I had written a line from the Metallica song “Holier Than Thou”. The line goes: “It’s not who you are, it is who you know.” In some time, a conversation is emerging around this on my whiteboard. Below is how it goes:
Me: It is not who you are, it is who you know.
Unknown person 1: Well, really, “it is not what you know, but who you know”
Unknown person 2: (referring to my original line) What does it mean? Please explain.
Me: This is lyrics of a Metallica song.
I really do not know who wrote those. I know they are different people because the handwriting is different. I am curious if this is going to continue. I will post here if I get new messages on my whiteboard.
Now playing: Manda And The Marbles – Seventeen
Turker – good blog. I like all of these, but coming from somebody who’s been in the recruiting world for a while, I will agree that “who you know” seems to make all the difference in the world. It’s just the way the axis spins in the corporate world.
Keep bloggin’ – good stuff.
Thank you for your good words about my blog and for the encouragement to keep blogging. It is worth more when it comes from someone who has a great blog himself and who I read regularly.
I agree that unfortunately “who you know” beats both “who you are” and “what you know” most of the time.
